Hammarskjöld’s Legacy

Dag Hammarskjöld’s life and legacy informs all aspects of the work we do and, in this way, the Dag Hammarskjöld Legacy programme is a cross-cutting initiative shaping not only the work we do but also how we work.

The Second Secretary-General shaped a lasting concept of the role and responsibilities of the international civil servant, creating standards against which today’s civil servants are to be measured. The goal of this programme is to promote the values and norms that he stood for.

While we aim to preserve Dag Hammarskjöld’s legacy, the concept of this newly launched programme, is to promote a living legacy – one that connects, and re-casts Hammarskjöld’s ethics and principles in a contemporary context. We will do this through a variety of activities spanning from seminars to research initiatives, cultural events to promotional publications. We also hope to engage a wide range of partners in discussion and debate, creating synergies both within and outside the United Nations.

Within the Legacy programme, we are shaping a new project – The Integrity of the International Civil Servant (IICS). Today, as the UN is grappling with issues of reform and relevancy, the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation believes that the time is ripe to reflect on and revitalise Hammarskjöld’s principles as they relate to the international civil servant in today’s global context. The Foundation’s ambition with its new project is to invigorate of the IICS concept and its practical implications in the UN.

Dag Hammarskjöld’s legacy belongs to us all and we invite interested partners to contact us – to share your reflections of Dag Hammarskjöld or to engage with us on preserving his legacy and promoting his life’s work to a new audience.
