Making the UN ‘Fit for Purpose’: Lessons from the ‘Delivering as One’ Experience

Nearly 60 years have passed since the UN development system was established and, during these years, the world has changed significantly. The UN system faces challenges in keeping pace with the world around it and in remaining a leading ‘partner of choice’ in a rapidly changing world.

dd-paper_no11frontpageIn response to these changes and the need for the UN development system to be optimally geared to deliver on the next generation of sustainable development goals, a discussion is taking place, initiated by the UN system and member states, on how to make the UN more ‘fit for purpose’ to support delivery of the post-2015 agenda. This represents an opportunity for the UN, member states and other stakeholders to assess and reposition the UN development system vis-a-vis global development challenges and the new universal agenda that will be put in place to deal with them.
