Respect for the role of international law and international institutions has, according to many observers, declined in recent years; others argue that over a longer period of time the use of, and thus the respect for, international institutions has increased substantially. There is public debate on this theme and many scholarly contributions have been made. The 2005 Dag Hammarskjöld Symposium discussed matters relating to the credibility and legitimacy of the United Nations System, the institutional framework created by nation states with the objective of ensuring international peace and security.
