About Björn Holmberg

Björn Holmberg brings over 25 years of experience in development cooperation, peacebuilding, and diplomacy, with a rich international background in international relations, peace and security, human rights, gender equality, development programming, leadership, and management.

He has held positions at both operational programme and headquarters levels. His earlier roles include serving as Head of the UN Secretariat’s Regional Clearing House Programme on Small Arms and Light Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-LiREC),  Head of the first Division for Peace and Security at Sida, and Vice Chair of the Network on Conflict, Peace, and Development Cooperation at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development – Development Assistance Committee (OECD-DAC) in Paris.

His more recent assignments include serving as Deputy Head of Mission and Country Director for Swedish Development Cooperation at the Swedish Embassy in Guatemala, Director of the International Secretariat for the International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations, Deputy National Director at Plan International Sweden, and Secretary-General and Coordinator of the Swedepeace Foundation.

Björn Holmberg holds a doctorate in Peace and Conflict Research from Uppsala University, Sweden. He has worked in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and is fluent in Swedish, English, and Spanish.
