‘Financing the UN Development System: Resourcing the Future’ is the 10th edition of this report series providing a comprehensive overview of the financing of the UN development system.
This year the global community continues to grapple with the COVID-19 aftermath, violent conflicts, and an escalating climate crisis. The UN’s role in maintaining peace and protecting human rights is challenged and not all 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be met by 2030.
In part one, the report gives some of the most up-to-date financial data in the UN development system and brings an insight into the UN development system funding structure and its efforts to support the Agenda 2030. It includes financial data from various UN entities and emphasises the need for systemic transformation through innovation, better data analysis, including stronger performance orientation.
In part two, contributors share insights on how to improve quality funding for development. They offer a clearer focus on human development and tell us why there is an urgent need to protect global public goods and share examples of how Member States are engaging in the peace, development and climate nexus.
The need to improve funding quality and the urgency to protect global public goods is highlighted. It also gives examples of why investment in the nexus of peace, development and humanitarian work, as well as climate action are critical. Contributors underscore the necessity to work together to achieve sustainable development, address global crises and effectively resourcing the future.
The 2024 edition is also hosted on a specialised microsite as an interactive online version featuring data visualisations where readers can explore the latest financial flows in depth. Here we also learn more about the contributing countries to UN entities and review the expenditure data by country and year. Included is an archive of all previous reports. See below for one of many visualisations.
Production of this report and the operation and maintenance of the associated financingun.report microsite is a partnership initiative between the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office (including the UN Development Programme) with a support grant from the Swedish government.
