The 3 November 2016, Jose Ramos-Horta was chosen by the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and Uppsala University to deliver the 2015 Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture. Mr Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of Timor-Leste, was chosen for his outstanding efforts to promote peaceful solutions to conflict, at the national and at the international level, and to strengthen the United Nations’ work on peace and security.

About the Lecturer
José Ramos-Horta is an East Timorese politician, serving his country as President between 2007–2012. After his years as President, he has served as Under- Secretary-General, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Integrated Peace Building Mission in Guinea-Bissau (West Africa) (2013-14) and then Co-Chair for International Commission on Multilateralism, International Peace Institute in NewYork, as well as Chair for the High Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations, appointed by the UN Secretary-General (2014-15).
About the lecture
In his lecture, José Ramos-Horta elaborated on four essential shifts that must be embraced in the future design and delivery of UN peace operations. He also emphasised that there are no shortcuts to peace and to sustainable and equitable development, and that the eradication of extreme poverty is a moral imperative for all and crucial for the attainment of durable peace.
