UN 80 Years in a World of Change – National Celebration

On 24 October, the Foundation co-hosted this year’s United Nations Day celebration at Uppsala Castle, centred on the theme ‘UN 80 Years in a World of Change’

The ‘UN 80 Years in a World of Change’ was the theme of the United Nations Day celebrations on 24 October organised by the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, the Swedish UN Association, Uppsala UN Association, the UN agencies and funds together with the host County Governor of Uppsala.

About 300 participants gathered in the historic State Hall at Uppsala Castle with many more joining online bringing voices from civil society, the UN system, politics, and individuals with lived experience from conflict-affected contexts and shared reflections on the legacy of the UN. The focus was on lifting the importance of strengthening multilateralism with the UN at its core for peace, sustainable development, and future generations.

Performances by Swedish music idol Tusse and the Uppsala Music School Choir anchored the cultural elements of the programme with strong messages of inclusion and tolerance. The day was imbued with courage, engagement, and hope for the future.

The legacy of Dag Hammarskjöld, the second UN Secretary-General, was present throughout the dialogues and reflections – a reminder of the enduring values of integrity, service, and peace that continue to guide the United Nations.
