A roadmap to ending global poverty, building a life of dignity for all and leaving no one behind – 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted this weekend

More than 150 world leaders attended the UN Sustainable Development Summit at the UN headquarters in New York to formally adopt an ambitious new sustainable development agenda for the world. The historic new agenda, entitled “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” agreed upon by the 193 Member States of the United Nations, includes 17 concrete Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Summit was the climax of a negotiating process that has spanned more than two years, involving all UN’s 193 member states and an unprecedented participation from a broad range of stakeholders from all levels in society.

The UN Secretary-General has said that this agreement “encompasses a universal, transformative and integrated agenda that heralds an historic turning point for our world. This is the people’s agenda, a plan of action for ending poverty in all its dimensions, irreversibly, everywhere and leaving no one behind. It seeks to ensure peace and prosperity and forge partnerships with people and planet at the core.”

The new agenda highlights poverty eradication as the overarching goal and has at its core the integration of the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The emerging agenda is unique in that it calls for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income. Member States pledge that as they embark on this collective journey, no one will be left behind.

Implementing this universal new agenda will require a departure from “business as usual” and intensified international cooperation on many fronts will be needed.

“We have a big, bold agenda before us – now we must work to make it real in people’s lives everywhere,” said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, ahead of the gaveling of a new agenda for sustainable development.
