There is no lack of in-depth literature about Dag Hammarskjöld. His life and career as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations have been well chronicled by revered officials and scholars from Brian Urquhart to Roger Lipsey. What more then could a new biography capture?
In this new book titled Markings of His life, Dag Hammarskjöld, the individual and the statesman, emerges in an accessible and personable manner quite never like before. Together with almost a hundred photographs, many published for the first time, renowned Swedish biographer Henrik Berggren writes with vigour and empathy about his life.
The volume follows Hammarskjöld from his aristocratic childhood in Sweden to his searching youth in Uppsala castle, from his successful and rather unknown period as a Swedish civil servant to his illustrious time as head of the United Nations.
“It is impossible to paint a complete portrait of Dag Hammarskjöld – but it is possible to present a sketch. We hope this biography will contribute to the knowledge of his life and his legacy, and enhance appreciation for the potential of the Charter of the United Nations.” said Henrik Hammargren, Executive Director of the Dag Hammarksjöld Foundation.
The biography is the result of a collaboration between the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and Max Ström, a Swedish publishing house well known for its photographic works and richly illustrated volumes. The writer, Henrik Berggren, authored the book in Swedish and it has been translated into English, bringing the life of one of the world’s most revered international statesmen to audiences well beyond his homeland.
