We learned with sadness of the sudden passing of former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. He guided the United Nations through a turbulent and challenging period in its history in the aftermath of the cold war.
As Secretary-General, he followed in Dag Hammarskjöld’s footsteps and presided over a dramatic rise in UN peacekeeping. His landmark report “An Agenda for Peace” also emphasised the importance of post-conflict peacebuilding, which informs a lot of our thinking to this day.
We extend our condolences to Boutros Boutros-Ghali’s family and friends, and to the United Nations community.
